The technology.
Active sites combine HTML, PHP and SQL to enable content to be generated on the fly when users access the site. This is useful when the site must adapt to the users demands. As an example the telephone directory on this site can be sorted and filtered in a number of ways in order to make it list the entries which a particular user needs. All the data which the site displays resides in the database, not in HTML files. This allows the data to be re-formatted without having to re-design the web pages.

Applications.
This system is particularly appropriate where content is repetitive. For example where documents need to be stored for an ISO 9001 certification. Each document has to have a title, some content, a version no, a date and a person who is responsible for it. This repetitive information can easily be stored in a database and accessed by all who need it. Even the storage of the documents can be controlled from the browser.
