LINUX SERVERS AND NETWORKING
E-MAIL SYSTEMS
Our e-mail systems provide the following benefits:
Standards compliance.
Our e-mail servers use standard SMTP (Simple Mail Transport Protocol) and POP (Post Office Protocol) to handle all mail passed
through them. This means that they are compatible with most common mail software like Microsoft Outlook Express (included with
Microsoft Windows), Microsoft Outlook (included in some versions of Microsoft Office), Netscape Communicator, Eudora, K Mail
etc.
Internal mail.
Users on the company network can exchange e-mail without it ever leaving the company. This is both secure and fast. Electronic
messaging allows colleagues to communicate more effectively as they are able to leave messages for each other when they are unable
to speak to each other (out of the office, on the phone etc.).
External mail.
Mail sent to destinations outside the company network is sent to a queue. This queue is periodically forwarded to an external ISP
(Internet Service Provider - Like MWEB) for delivery over the Internet. Internet mail destined for the company network is collected
in a similar queue at the ISP and fetched periodically. The interval at which this occurs can be selected to suit your
requirements.
Seamless.
Users on the network do not need to act differently for external and internal e-mail. The server determines where mail should be
sent and processes it accordingly.
Cost saving.
A single server periodically connecting to the ISP to collect mail using one telephone line is considerably less costly than
having multiple users connecting to the Internet on an ad-hoc basis.
Using a single, fast ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) line as opposed to several modems and telephone lines further
reduces costs.
